How to create an email forwarder — A Forwarder Changes the Delivery Path

You want info@ landing in someone's existing inbox, without discovering three weeks later that half of it is going to their spam folder.

The short answer

A forwarder relays a message onward with your server inserted into the delivery path while the original sender's address is preserved — which is both the point and the catch. In cPanel it is one screen: Email, then Forwarders, then Add Forwarder, with the intercepting address and the destination. Setup takes three minutes; understanding the delivery consequence is what stops it failing quietly.

That inserted hop is why forwarded mail sometimes gets filtered at the far end. The receiving provider sees your server relaying mail that claims to be from someone else, which is a pattern some filters treat with suspicion — so always send a test and check which folder it lands in before the address goes on anything printed.

Engineers on shift

This page treats a forwarder as a routing decision rather than a convenience. It costs nothing to create and it can quietly carry a company's mail for years, which is a combination worth being deliberate about.

The decision underneath it is ownership: does this address need a history and the ability to reply as itself, or does it just need to reach whoever is answering? That question picks alias or mailbox every time.

One screen, and what it actually does

cPanel, then Email, then Forwarders, then Add Forwarder. Enter the address that should intercept the mail and the destination that should receive it, and that is the entire configuration. No mailbox is created and no storage is used unless you point it at one.

Mechanically, your server accepts the message and re-sends it to the destination while keeping the original From address. Nothing is rewritten in the body and nothing is stored — it is a relay, and the message arrives looking as though it came from the original sender via you.

Why forwarded mail gets filtered

The receiving provider checks the sending server against the policies published for the From domain. On a forwarded message, the server presenting it is yours while the From address belongs to someone else, so those checks no longer line up and a cautious filter may treat the result as suspect.

That is the mechanism behind 'some of my forwarded messages just vanish'. It is not random and it is not your server misbehaving. Whitelisting the path at the destination usually settles it; fetching into a real mailbox instead removes the extra hop altogether.

Alias or mailbox, decided on ownership

Use a mailbox when the address needs an owner, a stored history and the authority to reply as that identity. Use a forwarder when it is simply a route to a person answering from their own account. Role addresses generally want forwarders; humans generally want mailboxes.

Note the difference in what remains behind. Forwarding from a genuine mailbox keeps a copy in it; a forwarder with no mailbox underneath purely relays and stores nothing. If you will ever need to prove what info@ received, that distinction matters more than the convenience does.

Forwarders outlive the people they were built for

A forwarder set up for a colleague keeps carrying company mail long after they have left, delivering quietly to an inbox nobody reads. There is no expiry and nothing prompts a review, so the only fix is procedural: add 'review the forwarders' to your offboarding checklist.

Audit the list every few months anyway. It takes two minutes in the panel, and on any account more than a couple of years old it usually turns up at least one destination that surprises somebody.

Working through an inbox that carries its own domain name

The mail platform behind the route

Every runbook here was exercised on the platform we actually operate — cPanel, LiteSpeed, NVMe storage, one-click installs — so the Forwarders screen and its behaviour match yours rather than a generic host's.

Mailboxes on your own domain come as part of the plan — email is included, never sold back to you at checkout.

  • Email addresses that run on your own domain name
  • Spam and virus screening on every mailbox as standard
  • Browser webmail plus IMAP, POP and SMTP for any mail app

Why HostingFast

Standard on every plan

The mechanism, not just the button

You leave knowing what a forwarder does to the delivery path, which is why filtering happens and how to predict it.

Alias versus mailbox settled

The decision is framed on ownership and history rather than tidiness, so the answer holds up later.

Filtering explained, not shrugged at

Vanishing forwarded mail has a cause you can act on, and the page names both fixes.

Tested before it is printed

A test message and a check of the destination folder, before the address appears on a card or an invoice.

An audit habit

Forwarders have no expiry, so the guide puts a review into offboarding rather than trusting anyone to remember.

Scoped honestly

Creating a forwarder is a beginner-level job — about 3 minutes each, and the thinking is worth more than the typing.

Quick Start

From order to online

  1. 1

    Decide alias or mailbox first

A mailbox when the address needs an owner, a history and the ability to reply as itself. A forwarder when it only needs to reach whoever is answering from their own account.

  2. 2

Create it in the Forwarders screen

cPanel, then Email, then Forwarders, then Add Forwarder. The address that intercepts, the destination that receives, and the configuration is complete.

  3. 3

Decide whether a copy stays behind

Forwarding from a real mailbox keeps a copy in it; a forwarder with no mailbox underneath stores nothing. Choose on whether you will ever need to prove what arrived.

  4. 4

Send a test and check the folder

Forwarding into a large provider can trip its filters, because your server is now in the delivery path. Note which folder the test landed in before the address goes anywhere public.

  5. 5

Put a review in the offboarding checklist

Forwarders have no expiry and quietly carry company mail for years. Audit the list every few months — it takes two minutes and usually finds something.

Frequently Asked

What people ask us most often

Why do some forwarded messages simply never arrive?

Filtering at the destination. A forwarded message keeps the original sender's address while your server is the one presenting it, so the checks the receiving provider runs against the sending domain no longer line up. Whitelisting the path at the destination usually fixes it; collecting into a real mailbox instead removes the extra hop and the problem with it.

Does forwarding into Gmail or Outlook.com behave differently?

Often, yes — the large providers filter forwarded mail more aggressively than smaller ones, and they rarely tell you why. Send a test to each destination you actually use and note the folder it lands in. If a role address matters commercially, give it a real mailbox and let the person collect it over IMAP rather than relying on a relay.

How quickly can a site be live here?

Minutes rather than days. The account activates as soon as payment clears, the domain — free for the first year on annual plans — connects immediately, and the one-click installer puts WordPress or any of 240+ applications in place straight away. Already hosted elsewhere? Send the details and we migrate it free, normally within a day.

Is there somewhere safe to test changes before they go live?

Yes — plans with staging let you clone the live site, work on the clone, and push it live once it behaves. That turns 'I hope this works' into a verified change before a single customer meets it.
