Web hosting for hair salons — The booking widget decides your interaction score

Somebody decides to book at nine in the evening, on a phone, and the only thing standing between that decision and your diary is a widget you did not write.

The short answer

On a salon site the metric that matters is interaction to next paint, not largest contentful paint. The page paints quickly; what it does badly is respond, because a third-party booking widget is loading its own JavaScript while your visitor is trying to tap. 200 milliseconds is the threshold to hold.

The pages around it come off NVMe behind a LiteSpeed cache, from $2.42 a month on Sprint, with free SSL, free migration, mailboxes on your own domain and 24/7 support. What you control is where the widget sits and how much else loads beside it.

NVMe drives across every tier

A salon site has four jobs: say what things cost, show recent work, introduce the team, and take a booking. Three of them are cheap. The fourth is nearly always delegated to a booking platform, and that delegation is where the site's performance is actually decided.

This is why salon sites so often score respectably in a speed test and still feel awkward on a phone. Paint metrics measure how quickly something appears; they say nothing about whether the page responds when a thumb lands on it.

So the work here is in a different order from most. Deal with responsiveness first, then the price list, then the quiet failures around mail and reminders that lose an appointment without anybody noticing.

The metric a booking widget actually affects

Run Lighthouse on the booking page with Mobile selected and Slow 4G throttling and look at interaction to next paint rather than the headline score. Then open the Performance panel, record a page load, and look at long tasks on the main thread — a booking widget usually appears as a solid block of scripting during exactly the window a visitor would be reaching for it.

Test the page once with the widget removed to establish what it costs you. That number is the honest basis for a decision: either the widget earns its place, or it belongs on a dedicated booking page reached by a button rather than loaded on every visit.

A price list is a table, not a graphic

Salon price lists are very often published as an image exported from a design tool. That is heavy, unsearchable, unreadable to a screen reader, and impossible to update without going back to the original file — which is why so many published prices are last year's.

As an HTML table the same information weighs almost nothing, is cached indefinitely by LiteSpeed, appears in search results, and can be edited in the browser between clients. It is the single cheapest improvement available on most salon sites and it is not really a hosting change at all.

Where the appointment is actually lost

Three places, in order of frequency. The widget takes long enough to become interactive that the visitor gives up. The price list is an image they cannot read on a phone, so they do not know what they are booking. Or the confirmation email never arrives and they assume it did not work.

The third is the one nobody measures. Outbound mail here goes through MailChannels with SPF, DKIM and DMARC configured on the domain, which is what stops an automated confirmation being filtered. Book a test appointment yourself, from the live site, and follow the email all the way to an inbox.

Mail, reminders and the address clients reply to

Reminders are the highest-value email a salon sends, and they are worthless in a spam folder. Keep them on your own domain rather than a platform address, so the sending domain, the reply-to address and the brand all agree — receiving servers weigh that alignment.

Mailboxes on your own domain are included with hosting, with spam and virus screening in front of them, and standalone Email Hosting at $2.99 a month covers up to ten mailboxes of 10 GB each if you would rather keep mail separate from the site entirely.

A customer pleased with how quickly their site now loads

Fast where a thumb lands

Your own pages — the price list, the team, the gallery — are cached by LiteSpeed and served from NVMe, so they never contribute to the responsiveness problem. That leaves the whole budget for the booking flow.

Free SSL, free migration and mailboxes on your own domain come with the plan, support is staffed at every hour, and the renewal figure matches the figure you ordered at.

  • Interaction to next paint measured on the booking page
  • Cached price list and team pages, served without PHP
  • MailChannels on outbound mail, with authentication configured
  • Mailboxes on your own domain, screened for spam and viruses

Frequently Asked

What people ask us most often

Why does my salon site score well but feel slow to use?

Because the score you are reading is a paint metric and the problem is responsiveness. Largest contentful paint measures when something appears; interaction to next paint measures whether the page reacts when it is touched. A booking widget executing its own JavaScript blocks the main thread during exactly the moment a visitor reaches for it. Measure interaction to next paint and hold it under 200 milliseconds.

Should the booking widget be on the homepage?

Only if it earns its place there. Measure the homepage with and without it: if it costs you a meaningful amount of interaction time, put a prominent button on the homepage and load the widget on a dedicated booking page instead. Visitors who intend to book will follow the button, and everybody else stops paying for a widget they were never going to use.

What is wrong with publishing the price list as an image?

Four things. It is far heavier than the same words as text, so it slows the page. It cannot be read by search engines, so you lose the queries where somebody is comparing prices. It cannot be read by a screen reader at all. And it cannot be edited without going back to the design file, which is exactly why so many published price lists are out of date.

Do I need separate email hosting for reminders?

Not necessarily — mailboxes on your own domain are included with every hosting plan, with spam and virus screening in front of them. Standalone Email Hosting at $2.99 a month gives you up to ten mailboxes of 10 GB each if you want mail kept independent of the website. Either way, keep the sending address on your own domain so confirmations and reminders are authenticated properly.

Changing hosts? Run through our checklist first.

A straightforward sequence for a switch your visitors never feel: which files move first, how to shift email across without losing a single message, the right moment to repoint DNS, and the two mistakes behind almost all the downtime we get asked to rescue.

You'll get the checklist email, then occasional pointers on keeping a site running fast. Unsubscribe the moment you want out — the privacy policy covers the rest.
