Your Theme Sets the Ceiling. Caching Only Reaches It
The cache is hitting, the server responds quickly, and the page still feels slow — which points at what the theme is asking the browser to do.
The short answer
A theme is the design layer of a CMS site — templates, styling and layout packaged as one installable unit — and in performance terms it sets a ceiling that caching can approach but never exceed.
Caching removes the server from the equation. What remains is the theme's markup, its stylesheets and scripts, and whichever element it makes largest above the fold, and none of that is improved by serving it faster.

Themes dress the same content differently. Switch and the site reads as new while not one post, page or image has moved. Block themes let you design inside the editor; classic themes pair customiser settings with a child theme when something needs changing safely.
A theme is also privileged code. How often the author ships updates, and how much weight it drags behind it — an options-laden page builder against lean markup — shapes speed and security every bit as much as appearance.
Finding the LCP element it chose for you
Run a Lighthouse audit and read which element it identifies as the largest contentful paint. On most themes it is the hero image or the heading inside a hero block, and its size, format and loading behaviour decide the metric almost single-handedly.
Check that the element is not lazy-loaded, because deferring the very thing the metric measures is a common and self-defeating configuration. Preloading it, and serving it as WebP at the size it is actually displayed, is usually the whole fix.
Weighing the payload before you commit
Load a demo of the theme and read the transfer size and request count in the Network panel with the cache disabled. A theme shipping a megabyte of CSS and a dozen scripts on a text page has told you what it will cost you on every page of your site.
Page builders deserve particular attention here. The flexibility is real and so is the markup it generates — nested wrappers, inline styles, a script per module. Compare a builder page against a plain block page on the same site and the difference is your ongoing tax.
Changing it without losing the changes
Edits made directly to a theme's files are erased by its next update. A child theme holds your overrides separately so updates keep arriving, which matters far more for security than it does for convenience.
Where the theme provides its own hooks or a custom CSS field, prefer those over copying template files wholesale. The less of the parent theme you have duplicated, the less of its future maintenance you have quietly taken on.
Proving a swap actually helped
Clone to staging, install the new theme, and compare like for like: the same URL, cache disabled, transfer size, request count and LCP element recorded before and after. A theme change is one of the few edits where the lab reading is genuinely representative.
Then watch field data for a fortnight after the switch. Core Web Vitals are read at the 75th percentile of real visits, so an improvement that only helps fast connections shows up in your lab number and not in your assessment.

What people ask us most often
Will changing theme lose my content?
No — posts, pages and media never belonged to the theme. What you rebuild is presentation: menus, widgets, customiser settings and anything the old theme provided as a shortcode. Rehearse the swap on staging and it becomes an unhurried afternoon rather than an incident.
Do page builders really cost that much performance?
They cost markup and assets, which is measurable rather than a matter of opinion. Build the same page twice on staging, once with the builder and once with plain blocks, and compare transfer size and request count. The gap is what the flexibility charges you on every visit.
Is staging an add-on, or part of the plan?
Part of it, on the plans that carry it. Clone the live site, do the work on the clone, then push it live once it behaves. That is the whole difference between hoping an update survives contact with production and knowing it does before a visitor ever meets it.
Is email included, or billed separately?
