SSD: a word that no longer narrows anything down
Two plans both say SSD, one costs twice as much, and the spec sheet will not tell you why.
The short answer
An SSD stores data in flash with no moving parts, which removed the seek time that made mechanical drives the bottleneck in every database-heavy workload.
As a buying signal, though, the term has expired. Serious hosting has been entirely off spinning disks for years, so SSD on a spec sheet no longer separates anything from anything. The question that still discriminates is which bus the flash is on: SATA, which was designed around mechanical drives, or PCIe with NVMe, which was not.

The generational split is real and it is not subtle. SATA inherited a command set and a bus written for platters, and it tops out at around six gigabits per second with a single shallow queue. NVMe over PCIe was designed for flash from the start: many deep queues serviced in parallel, with latency an order of magnitude lower on the small random reads a website actually makes.
So the same three letters cover hardware from two different decades. When you are comparing plans, treat SSD as the beginning of the question rather than the answer to it.
One acronym, two decades of hardware
A SATA SSD fitted in the early part of the last decade is still an SSD, still enormously faster than the mechanical drive it replaced, and still a generation behind current flash. Nothing about the label distinguishes it from a drive bought last month.
That is why price and wording together are the tell. A premium plan advertising nothing more specific than SSD is usually describing a refresh cycle somebody let slip, and the sites on it will feel it most in uncached admin work.
The bus is the tell
Ask what the storage is attached to, not what it is made of. NVMe stated explicitly means PCIe and parallel queues. SATA SSD is honest and dated. Network or cloud storage is a different trade again: resilient and flexible, generally with more latency than a local drive, which suits some workloads and punishes database-heavy ones.
Then ask whether it applies to every plan. Current storage held back for the top tier tells you what the rest of the fleet looks like.
Wear exists and is mostly somebody else's problem
Flash cells accept a finite number of writes, which sounds alarming and rarely is. Enterprise drives are specified with endurance ratings that comfortably exceed a hosting workload, wear levelling spreads writes across the whole device, and monitoring flags a drive long before it becomes interesting.
The design answer sits above the drive anyway. RAID means one failure is not an outage, and daily backups mean whatever eventually happens to a drive does not have to happen to your data. Both run on every plan here, with restores available from the panel in a click.

If a host only says SSD, what should I ask next?
Whether the flash is on SATA or on PCIe with NVMe, and whether that applies to every plan or only the top ones. Those two answers tell you more than the rest of the feature list combined. If the reply is vague, treat the vagueness as the answer: a host running current hardware has no reason to be coy about it.
What actually happens when a drive fails under my account?
Nothing you would notice, in the normal case. Storage is arranged so a single drive failing does not take data with it, monitoring flags degradation before failure, and daily backups sit behind that as the second line. Restores are self-service from the panel, file or database, without opening a ticket.
Is a SATA drive ever the right choice?
For bulk that nobody is waiting on — archives, backup retention, media libraries served through a CDN — cheap capacity beats low latency and the older bus is perfectly sensible. It is the wrong choice for anything a database sits on, which on a hosting account means the part your visitors are actually waiting for.
