99.9% uptime: what the figure permits and what really fails

Three nines appears on every host's homepage. Almost none explain what the figure includes, what it leaves out, or how hosting platforms genuinely fail. We operate one, and we think the fog around the number does more for marketing than for customers, so here is the view from operations in plain language.
Start with the arithmetic. 99.9% uptime allows 43 minutes and 50 seconds of downtime per month. 99.99% allows 4 minutes and 23 seconds. 100% does not exist and never has. A host claiming it is describing an aspiration, a hole in its monitoring, or a refund policy, but not its platform.
What actually knocks websites offline
Listed roughly by how often we meet them on shared platforms. Application faults lead: a plugin update white-screens WordPress and the site is dark while the server underneath hums along fine. Next comes resource exhaustion, where your own traffic surge or a neighbouring account collides with PHP process limits. Then planned work such as kernel patches and PHP upgrades, which done well cost seconds of graceful restart. Then hardware, usually disks, which is what RAID and real backups are for. Then network events, meaning upstream carrier trouble and DDoS weather. Last and most famous, whole-datacentre incidents.
The order matters because the advertised figure covers only a slice of it. An uptime SLA records whether the server responded, not whether your site worked. The plugin that broke your checkout registers in no one's downtime column. Which is why daily backups and a staging environment do more for the uptime your visitors actually feel than the distance between 99.9% and 99.95% ever will.
Reading an uptime guarantee properly
Three questions cut any SLA down to its substance. First, who keeps score? A guarantee graded by the host's own monitoring, with maintenance windows carved out, is weaker than one you can audit yourself. Add free uptime monitoring to your site in ten minutes and the scorecard becomes yours.
Second, what do you get when it fails? Standard SLA credits refund the downtime pro rata, which works out to pennies for an hour offline. Treat the guarantee as a statement of engineering intent rather than insurance. Judge a host by its status-page track record and how it communicates mid-incident, not by the credit formula.
Third, what sits outside it? Scheduled maintenance, emergency maintenance, DDoS, upstream failures and force majeure are the usual exclusions. The shorter that list runs, the more the headline number is worth.
How we run our end of it
In concrete terms, here is the setup. NVMe RAID storage, so a single dead disk changes nothing. LiteSpeed answering cached pages, so most traffic spikes never reach PHP at all. Per-account resource isolation, so a neighbour's rough afternoon never becomes yours. Continuous external monitoring wired to alerts that wake an actual human. Daily backups with self-service restores, turning the most frequent failure class of all, the application kind, from an outage into a ten-minute rollback.
And the limits, stated plainly. We run scheduled maintenance, announced, off-peak and measured in seconds. We depend on upstream networks like every other host. A determined DDoS is weather we absorb and mitigate rather than something we can abolish. We commit to 99.9% on every plan because that is the level we can sustain across thousands of accounts, and we would rather walk you through the number than leave it on the page as decoration.

Roughly 43.8 minutes a month, or about 8 hours 46 minutes across a year. 99.99% permits 4.4 minutes a month. Engineering away that difference costs far more than the downtime costs a typical small site, which makes 99.9% with fast, honest recovery the sensible target for shared hosting.
Is the payout from an uptime guarantee worth anything?
Rarely. The usual credit refunds the downtime pro rata, which amounts to pennies. Value the SLA as an engineering commitment you can measure a host against, and measure it yourself with a free external monitor instead of relying on the host's own dashboard.
