Website builder vs WordPress — Judge a builder by what it sends to the browser

You want the site live this week, but you also do not want to discover in year two that the platform decides how fast your pages can ever be.

The short answer

Compare them on payload: open both in the network panel, count requests, weigh the JavaScript and read the Total Blocking Time, because a builder emits its own runtime on every page while a WordPress theme emits only what you chose to include.

That said, a small brochure site rarely suffers from either. Open both candidates in a browser's network panel, look at what arrives before the page is usable, and note where each platform stops letting you change things. Those two observations answer the question better than any feature grid, and they leave you with numbers you can revisit later.

Drag-and-drop builders ship a runtime because they have to: the layout engine that made editing easy has to reconstruct that layout in the browser. A WordPress site running a lean block theme ships whatever the theme and your plugins ask for, which can be much less — or considerably more, if you install thirty plugins.
