Measured Buying Guide
Hosting for small business websites — For a small firm, reachability is the performance metric
Someone who already heard your name is checking that the business is real — so the numbers that matter are whether the site answers and whether the contact form arrives.
The short answer
A mid-range cPanel plan with mailboxes and daily backups included — Pro carries the website of most trading businesses and still has room spare — with external monitoring pointed at it from day one.
The specification argument here is short, because a verification site is not a heavy workload. What is worth spending on instead is everything that proves the site is up and the mail is landing, because those are the two failures that cost you actual work.

For most small firms a website performs verification: somebody has heard the name and is checking that the business exists, trades, and can be contacted. That narrows the whole specification down to two things — staying reachable, and a contact form that delivers.
Both are measurable, and neither is measured by the feature grid you were about to compare. This page is about how you would know, in advance and afterwards, that a host is doing them.
Monitor it yourself, from outside
Every host monitors its own platform, and every host is the last to know that your particular site is down. Point an external uptime check at your home page from day one — a one-minute interval, alerting to a phone rather than an inbox.
That single habit turns uptime from a marketing figure into your figure. Ours is a 99.9% target with round-the-clock monitoring behind it, and if a month falls below it because of a fault on our side the terms entitle you to a pro-rated credit; ask and we apply it. We call it a target rather than a contractual SLA deliberately.
99.9% of a month is roughly forty-three minutes. Knowing the arithmetic is what stops the number being a slogan.
The contact form is a deliverability problem, not a website problem
A form that submits successfully and never arrives is the most expensive fault a small-business site has, because nothing anywhere reports it. Test it monthly by sending yourself an enquiry from an outside address and confirming it lands in the inbox rather than the junk folder.
SPF, DKIM and DMARC are configured for you here, and outbound mail goes through MailChannels, which is what gets it accepted by the large mailbox providers. Check the records exist with any public DMARC lookup — it takes thirty seconds and most small firms have never done it.
Keep the mailboxes on your own domain. An estimate sent from a free consumer address is measurably discounted by the person reading it.
What to buy, and what not to bother with
A mid-range cPanel plan with mailboxes and daily backups included — Pro carries the website of most trading businesses and still has room spare. In our line-up that is Turbo at $4.66 a month: 20 GB of NVMe, 25 sites, 1 TB of bandwidth.
Do not buy concurrency you will not use. A brochure site behind LiteSpeed serves cached pages without touching PHP, so extra cores change nothing you would notice. Buy the mailboxes, the backups and the migration instead.
Migration is free and usually completes within 24 hours, and the current site keeps serving visitors until you switch.
The pre-sales test worth running
Consumer-grade providers answer with a chatbot and invoice you from a no-reply address. Send a real question before you pay — ask them to explain their DMARC policy, or how a restore works — and judge the reply. Ours target 2 hours, 1 hour when a site is down.
Then check the paperwork. HostingFast is a trading name of Vitalcare at Home Ltd, registered in England and Wales, with terms under English law. Any host holding your domain and your mail should survive that search.

Written by the host, so check every claim
There is no commission in this for us and no ranking table to sell, which is why the page spends its length on things you can verify rather than on adjectives.
Backups run daily on every plan, and restoring a file or a database is one click in the panel rather than a ticket.
- External monitoring recommended over our own figures
- SPF, DKIM and DMARC configured for you
- Free migration, usually inside 24 hours
- Renewal billed at the price you signed up at

*Our number is the lowest-priced plan we sell on an annual term, pulled live from the same catalogue that powers our pricing page — it physically cannot fall out of date. The other three columns show the ranges shared hosts in each bracket typically advertise: introductory offers that mostly demand a one-to-four-year commitment, then jump once it expires. We no longer name rivals or print their prices, because a figure we cannot verify on the day you read it has no business on this page. Line us up against whichever host you are really weighing — and give the renewal row the hardest look.
Quick Start
From order to online
- 1
Put external monitoring on before anything else
One-minute interval against the home page, alerting to a phone. It costs almost nothing and it is the only uptime figure that is genuinely yours.
- 2
Send yourself an enquiry from outside
From an address on another provider, through the live contact form, once a month. Inbox is a pass; junk folder is a DMARC job; nothing at all is an incident.
- 3
Buy for mail and restores, not for cores
A cached brochure page never reaches PHP, so extra CPU changes nothing. Spend the difference on the tier that includes the mailboxes and the daily backup.

Frequently Asked
What people ask us most often
How would I know if my site went down at 2am?
Only if you are monitoring it from outside. Any external uptime service, set to a one-minute interval and alerting to a phone, will tell you before a customer does. We monitor the platform and usually catch hardware and network faults before the first customer notices, but nothing we run watches your particular site the way a check you own does.
How do I check my contact form is actually delivering?
Send an enquiry through the live form from an address on a different provider, once a month, and confirm where it lands. Inbox is a pass. Junk folder means the domain's mail authentication needs attention — SPF, DKIM and DMARC are configured here, and any public DMARC lookup will confirm the records are published.
What does 99.9% uptime work out to in minutes?
Roughly forty-three minutes a month. That is the arithmetic behind the figure, and it is worth knowing before the number reassures you. If a month drops below it because of a fault on our side, our terms entitle you to a pro-rated credit — ask and we apply it. We call it a target rather than a contractual SLA on purpose.
If I cancel, what happens to the site, the mail and the domain?
All three stay yours. Download a full backup from the panel at any point, before or during cancellation. Mailboxes export over IMAP into any client. The domain remains registered in your name for the term you paid for and can transfer to another registrar once the standard 60-day window has passed.
