Run PageSpeed Insights on your busiest gallery page and read two things. First, which element is flagged as the largest contentful paint — on a portfolio it will be a photograph, and you should know which one. Second, the field figure, which comes from real visitors rather than a simulated run.
2.5 seconds is the good threshold. If you are over it, the browser's network panel tells you why in one look: sort by transfer size, and the offending image will be at the top, usually an export that was never resized.
