Every first-time visitor pays for a DNS lookup before your server is even contacted — and that lookup is somebody's infrastructure too.

For first-time owners who would rather understand the mechanism than follow a rule of thumb. The bundling question is usually argued on trust; it is more usefully argued on latency and control.
Separating registrar from host is a habit formed when providers routinely obstructed transfers. Registry rules now enforce transfer rights across the board, so for a single-domain business the convenience of one account usually outweighs the old caution.
Where DNS sits in a page load
Before a browser can open a connection it has to resolve the name, and on a cold cache that means asking a recursive resolver, which may in turn ask the registry and then your authoritative nameservers.
For a returning visitor this costs nothing, because the answer is cached. For a first-time visitor arriving from search or an ad it is a real component of the time before anything appears, and it sits entirely in front of your server.
So the practical question is not who sold you the name. It is how quickly your authoritative nameservers answer, and how sensible your record TTLs are.
Run dig against your domain and read the query time. Repeat it against the same nameservers from a second network. Tens of milliseconds is normal and unremarkable; hundreds, or wild variation between locations, is a real cost being paid by every new visitor.
What one supplier genuinely simplifies
One login, one renewal date and one place where an A record and the account that serves it agree with each other. That last point is not trivial: most 'the site is down' incidents that turn out not to be the site are a record pointing somewhere the hosting no longer is.
The free first year of registration on an annual order is worth exactly what a year of that TLD costs, and no more. Price it as a discount, not as a reason.
The exit stays open regardless. A domain releases with an auth code once the registry's 60-day window has elapsed, and that is a rule of the registry rather than a courtesy of the supplier.
The TTL mistake that ruins a clean migration
Records with a long TTL are cached by resolvers all over the world, so changing them does not change what visitors see for as long as that TTL says. Discovering this on migration day is the classic version of the problem.
Drop the TTL on the relevant records to a few minutes at least a full old-TTL period before you plan to move. Then the cutover propagates in minutes rather than a day, and you can raise it again once the move has settled.
The thing to rule out entirely is any arrangement that makes retaining your own domain harder the moment you move the hosting elsewhere. Read the transfer policy before ordering; if it is not published, that is the answer.

How much time does DNS actually add to a first visit?
On a cold cache, the resolution has to complete before a connection can even be opened, so it is entirely additive. Run dig and read the query time: tens of milliseconds is normal, and hundreds means every new visitor is waiting on your nameservers before your server has done anything at all. Returning visitors pay nothing, which is why this cost hides from casual testing.
What TTL should I set, and when should I change it?
A comfortable default is an hour for stable records. Before a migration, drop the relevant records to a few minutes and do it at least one full old-TTL period in advance, so caches everywhere have expired by the time you cut over. Raise it again once the move has settled — low TTLs mean more lookups for everyone.
Does bundling make a future move harder in practice?

Is there any technical reason to keep the registrar separate?

At portfolio scale, or where the domain is the more valuable asset, keeping them apart with separate credentials is a defensible security choice — it just is not a performance one.
